A24 Cycleway Findon - Washington

During 2017, WSCC at last announced that planning for a new cycle path from Findon Valley to Washinginton was to begin with two phases :-

Phase 1 from Findon Valley shops to Findon;  with the feasibility study already on progress - on which WCF was consulted in December 2017 -  with consstruction in 2018 / 2019.                                                                                                                                                                                                                       Phase 2 from Findon to Washington; with a feasibility study planned - subject to a successful funding bid - for 2018 / 2019 with construction in 2019 / 2020  !                                                                                                                                                                                            ....................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................The A24 is no longer particularly safe, and is certainly not pleasant, for cycling. This means there is no route between Worthing and the towns and excellent cycling in the countryside to the north of the Downs.

There is plenty of space on the eastern verge of the A24 to provide a good-quality cycleway.

This path would be supported by Sustrans as part of access improvements and sustainable transport access to the new South Downs National Park. PDF icon LSTF National Park Comments.pdf

Legal Status

It is currently illegal, a criminal offence against the Highways Act 1835, to cycle along any footway beside the A24. For full details of the laws concerning this, see our Pavement Cycling page.

However where there isn't a footway, or where the footway has been left to deteriorate without maintenance, it is probably legal, if physically hard work, to cycle on the verge of the A24.
